The homeowner did not have enough space for a traditional walk-in wine cellar but did allow us to go through the home to see if there was any suitable site for a wine cellar or wine cabinet. We agreed that the never-used fireplace wall was the perfect fit. The idea started when we were sitting on the homeowner’s couch brainstorming about where the wine storage would go, and the idea hit us like a ton of bricks! The fireplace!

We decided to fill the entire living room wall (floor to ceiling) and frame out the entire fireplace with a large wine cabinet (approx 20′ long) The homeowner was amazed at the bottle count and the overall design. The cabinet was built and installed with a custom split refrigeration unit and UV glass to minimize the light from the living room windows during the day. The inside wine racks and the outside cabinet were constructed out of mahogany and finished with a clear coat of lacquer. The wine racks consist of case bin storage, 750 storage, magnum horizontal displays and Bordeaux bottles. The overall footprint of the wine cabinet came in just under 26″ which allowed plenty of space for access and foot traffic. The project took just over 4 weeks and was installed in 3 days. The closet went through a reconstruction of sorts, with the room needing vapor barrier prep for a split cooling system and double doors with side lights. Once the construction was complete, we took final dimensions and began to build the metal wine racks and doors. The split cooling unit was then installed and the room painted. It took just over six weeks for the metal wine racks to be finished and the owner ended up with just over 200 bottles for an amazing presentation and display.

The home, located in Westchester NY, had an unfinished basement where the custom wine cellar would be built.  Our cellar design consultation (both for wine storage and the build out of the wine room) uncovered the client’s needs and wants. The customers made it very clear how many OWC (original wood case bins) were to be stored, but were very open to 750 storage, horizontal displays, and, of course, dramatic windows and door.

We decided that the existing hvac trunk would become a soffit (left side of room) but enclosed a column in a rather seamless way. While we began constructing the shell we also began to sketch out the racking lay-out. Once we agreed on the design, the homeowners chose Sapele Mahogany for the wine racks and a patterned stone tile for the floor. The lighting was clean and simple with several 3″ cans and sconces. The wine racks were very challenging because of the different ceiling heights but came out fantastic.

The wine cellar was a true build-out in every sense of the word, with several challenges including but not limited to placement of the cooling system coil and compressor, the unique ceiling heights, the time frame of the build-out…but as always we were on time and on budget!

As we have learned over the years, there is one common theme among these clients: a love and passion for wine, the Flyers, Eagles, and of course the Fightin’ Phils!

This stunning and dramatic wine cellar has storage capacity of just about 2,500 bottles. The room began as a blank canvas. After several meetings with the owners, and of course their architect, we began to design the space.

The owners passion for wine was to be balanced with a design feature (custom mill work and adult entertainment area for dinners and tastings). We decided to basically split the room in half with our more traditional wine racks on the left side of the room (which include custom diamond bins, display rows, 750 and mag storage, 2 water falls and of course the custom arch.

Built into the wine racks are 2 ductless split cooling units which are hidden behind 2 mahogany grill covers to match the wine racks and the overall aesthetics of the wine room. On the right side of the room is where you will find the dramatic horizontal display (for the owners trophy wines) where a tasting table,cabinets, and storage area was added.

Whats nice about the storage area is it enabled the owners to store stemware, cheese plates, cork pulls, etc etc. The wine cellar has become the most popular destination in the home and who could argue with that?!

The customer asked Joseph & Curtis to visit his East Hampton estate to discuss possible designs and ideas regarding one specific area in the home. The room was large and was already sheet-rocked, tiled, and basically finished for a normal room.

After multiple discussions with the homeowner, we decided to design a wine cellar with a very small footprint to the overall space (the room is 5′ deep but 17′ long) so the owner could use the rest of the room for a table and tasting area.

Once cooling was determined for the wine cellar, we had to demo the existing room, install a vapor barrier, re-insulate and of course re-wire and re-rock. We then  designed 2 large windows (57″ x 108″ each) which had to be carried in by 8 workers down 2 sets of staircases as well as a one light glass and mahogany door.

We also incorporated the owner’s wishes by installing a special hardware that he purchased in Italy. The tasting area highlight was a mahogany stained ceiling (which was beadboard and beams). The wine racks were made from the same material as the ceiling mahogany and stained to match.

The owner had alot of stone in the home and we decided the windows should be wrapped in the same stone the owner used in other parts of the basement. The cooling system used was a ductless split with an outdoor condenser, temp alert tied into security, and t-stat for the wine room. The wine cellar capacity was well over 1,000 bottles and combines both  practicality as well as dramatic design elements for display.

The wine cellar is a perfect example of why you need a true wine cellar design professional not only to make your cellar dreams come true but to make it practical as well.

The only trick was the fact that the owners insisted that we maintain the overall aesthetics of the 1920 facade (stone and brick). This was tricky since we had to build an entire new wall to enclose the wine room, but in the end, maintaining the stone and brick facade turned out to be a brilliant suggestion.

The owners wanted us to add natural stone to the bottom of both windows as well as add an arched window where you can see the custom made wine display as well as the amazing brick work from the ping pong room.

We chose a natural slate floor to pick up the stone and brick colors as well as a distressed plaster effect on the ceiling which added tremendous character and depth with the led lighting.

Last but not least, we built the entire wine cellar room (wine racks, windows, and crown) from African Mahogany – there just isn’t anything like it in the world!

The wine room has a bottle capacity of over 900 bottles and is equipped with a Joseph and Curtis Split cooling system. The #100 Wine Cellar Door was chosen for the entrance to the cellar.
